Wisdom

Solomon pleases God in asking first for wisdom to rule His people.

The psalmist declares to us, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Obedience to the covenant reaps great rewards. God gives food to those who fear Him. He has shone the works of his hand and brought redemption through his covenant. It is wise, even logical to obey.

Paul also enjoins us to live as wise people. Making the most of every moment. Not wasting our lives drunk and numb to the world, but rather drunk and immersed in the Spirit, praising and thanking God always, “any excuse for a song to God the Father in the name of our Master, Jesus Christ” (Message). Fully live. Fully immersed. That is wisdom. That is the fear of the Lord, lest we squander a moment we could spend in his will – his presence.

In proverbs, wisdom is laying a table for the simple to come and feast.

Jesus the very bread of life, wisdom incarnate invites the multitude to eat. Eat of the true bread, the Word of God, wisdom and life. Will the simple come and be satisfied? Will we leave the path of evil and turn into the house of wisdom and feast? Will we hear the call of the psalmist:

O fear the LORD, you his holy ones,
for those who fear him have no want.

The young lions suffer want and hunger,
but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.

Come, O children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
